Staying connected in Malaysia: what travellers should know
Peninsular Malaysia is well covered along the west coast, where Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka and Johor Bahru have strong 4G and 5G from Maxis and CelcomDigi; Tune Talk adds a third option on the same plan list. Coverage becomes less even as you move inland. The Cameron Highlands, Taman Negara rainforest, smaller islands and the interior of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo can have weak or no signal away from towns.
Local prepaid SIMs are sold cheaply at KLIA and other airports, but buying one means queuing and registering your passport. Free Wi-Fi is common in malls, hotels and cafes, though quality varies. Day-to-day travel leans heavily on apps: Grab is the main ride-hailing and food-delivery service, and Waze and Google Maps are widely used for driving. Those apps work best with steady mobile data rather than patchy Wi-Fi.
Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi before departure and enable it on arrival, turning on data roaming for the eSIM line only. Your home SIM can stay on for SMS codes with its data switched off. A few days in Kuala Lumpur needs a modest plan, while a two-week route from Penang to Borneo calls for more data. Top up online if a longer stay or heavy hotspot use eats through the allowance.
Quick tips for Malaysia
- Download offline maps before heading to Taman Negara or the Borneo interior, where signal fades quickly outside towns.
- Keep Grab open on mobile data in Kuala Lumpur; fares and driver tracking update better than on mall Wi-Fi.
- Ferry crossings to Langkawi, Tioman or the Perhentians may lose signal mid-sea, so save tickets and bookings offline.
- In the Cameron Highlands, check routes while still in town, as winding hill roads have coverage gaps.
- If you continue to Singapore or Thailand, choose a regional Asia plan, because this one covers Malaysia only.
Frequently asked questions
Does the eSIM work in Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo?
Yes in cities and towns such as Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Sandakan and Miri, where Maxis and CelcomDigi have good coverage. Inland jungle areas, river trips and mountain treks, including parts of the route around Mount Kinabalu, can have weak or no signal. Plan those days with offline maps and saved bookings.
Why use an eSIM instead of a cheap SIM at Kuala Lumpur airport?
Airport SIMs in Malaysia are inexpensive, but you must queue at a counter and register your passport, which can take time after a long flight. With the eSIM, setup is done before you leave home, you are online as soon as you land, and your own SIM stays in the phone for bank codes.
Will Grab and Waze work properly with this eSIM?
Yes. Both apps run on ordinary mobile data, and Maxis, CelcomDigi and Tune Talk cover the cities where Grab operates. Navigation and ride-hailing use relatively little data, so even a small plan can last a short city stay. Keep location services on for accurate pickup points.
How do I activate my Malaysia eSIM?
After you pay, open the QR code in your ScarabPay account and scan it in your phone settings. The Malaysia data plan installs in a minute or two, and you can turn it on when you arrive.
When should I install the eSIM?
You can install it before your trip and switch it on once you reach Malaysia. The validity period starts when the plan first connects to a network, not when you install it.
Can I keep my own number in Malaysia?
Yes. The Malaysia eSIM handles mobile data while your regular SIM stays active for your usual number, so you can still receive calls and texts.
What if I run out of data in Malaysia?
Simply buy another Malaysia plan from your ScarabPay account. You can top up as many times as you need, paying from your wallet or with crypto each time.
Do I need a ScarabPay account?
Yes. You buy and manage your Malaysia eSIM from your ScarabPay account, which also gives you one place for your wallet, cards and payments. Creating an account takes only a few minutes.
